Voters Skip the Handpicked Heir: Ahern Beats Neronha’s Pick for Rhode Island AG
What happened
Kim Ahern won the Sept. 9, 2026 Democratic primary for Rhode Island attorney general in a four-way race.
Preliminary unofficial Board of Elections tallies reported by News From The States / Rhode Island Current put Ahern at about 36.3%, Keith Hoffmann at about 33%, Rep. Joe Solomon Jr. at about 20%, and Rep. Jason Knight at about 10%.
Hoffmann had outgoing AG Peter Neronha’s endorsement and a large fundraising edge—over $1.5M raised including about $760k in self-loans. Ahern loaned herself about $295k late to answer paid attacks.
Ahern served about nine years as a special assistant attorney general in the Special Victims Unit, later chaired the Cannabis Control Commission, and also worked in the Raimondo and McKee administrations. Hoffmann was former policy director and senior counsel in Neronha’s office.
Ahern faces Republican Alan Gordon on Nov. 3. If elected, she would be only the second woman to serve as Rhode Island attorney general (after Arlene Violet, 1985–87).

Voters refused to rubber-stamp the outgoing AG’s preferred successor despite money and endorsement. That is a healthy distrust of handpicked succession in a powerful law office.
Trustworthy, competent, honest, and humble governance means independence and accountability—not dynastic anointing. The attorney general’s office exists to apply the law evenly, not to inherit a brand from the last occupant.
